Publication dates of Stephen King's IT messed up?

I own the mass market paperback version of Stephen King's IT. The front cover says copyright (c) Stephen King, 1980, but the book was published in 1986. I don't understand this at all. Plus, at the end of the book it says that the book was started in 1981 and finished in 1985. Thanks!
