How do you publish a book?

I started writing a book, and i thought after you were done with the book that you would have it edited and published. But now i am learning that you can get it edited chapter by chapter. I really don't what steps to take or a good publishing company. Do i need to spend any money to get it edited?Can anyone help me or give me advice?Thank you!!!
