Are mountain lions really that dangerous ?

I am wondering because I live in ct where they are suppose to be considered extinct but my town has had a confirmed mountain lion spotting and police have sent out phone calls to all 75,000 residents warning them of the mountain lion and now their doing more patrols and said that if you spot it to call police immediately so they can come their and have warnings posted plus it's a big deal on news
